Western New England University will host a talk by National Archives curator and Western New England University alumna Corinne Porter. The talk entitled Building a National Archives Exhibition: The 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment will be held on Thursday, October 3 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. in Sleith Hall, Wood Auditorium on the University campus. This event is free and open to the public. A reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:00 p.m. Registration is requested at bit.ly/corinneporter.
Corinne Porter, curator of Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote, has worked at the National Archives in Washington, DC, since 2007, and joined the exhibits team in 2013. She curates the National Archives Museum's Public Vaults permanent exhibition; was the curator for One Victory! (2015); a WWII photography exhibition for the U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan; lead researcher for Making their Mark: Stories through Signatures (2014); and curator of the “Rights of Native Americans” interactive table exhibit in the Records of Rights permanent exhibition (2013).
In this engaging presentation, Porter will discuss the history and contemporary relevance of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, during its 100th anniversary year. She will also explain the process of creating the Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote exhibition and how she came to find her passion as a curator.
Rightfully Hers commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment by looking beyond suffrage parades and protests to the often-overlooked story behind this landmark moment in American history. This inclusive retelling of the struggle for women’s voting rights illustrates the dynamic involvement of American women across the spectrum of race, ethnicity, and class to reveal what it really takes to win the vote for one-half of the people.
Porter holds a bachelor's degree in History from Western New England University and a Master's degree in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University.
